Working with architecture firm Gensler, ECT led the master planning and site design effort to expand the Johnson Controls headquarters in Glendale, Wisconsin. Sustainable development practices guided the expansion, which included the renovation of two buildings and construction of three new buildings – over 300,000 SF of new and completely renovated office space.
Water conservation and re-use strategies were paramount to the overall design of the 33-acre campus, which encompasses a stream and wetlands. Rainwater runoff from the new roof surfaces is collected in an underground 30,000-gallon cistern and reused for toilet flushing. Rainwater runoff from the existing buildings is diverted from the existing stream into a constructed pond that serves as an employee amenity.
ECT restored 13 acres of lawn into a diverse mix of native prairie grasses and forbs, that includes a half mile of new walking trails. Other rainwater management techniques include rain gardens and a permeable pavement parking lot. The combination of these sustainable site strategies resulted in a significant net reduction in impervious cover across the campus.
The skilled construction team trained in sustainable building methods and practices assured a high-quality, cost-effective result. ECT staff continues to work with the local maintenance contractor overseeing the landscape progression.
